My name is Alicia and at the age of 20 months I was diagnosed with cancer. I was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma.
Neuroblastoma is a cancer of specialised nerve cells. These cells are involved in the development of my nervous system and other tissues. Neuroblastoma can occur anywhere in my body, but it often occurs in one of the adrenal glands in the abdomen. The adrenal glands are specialised glands which are found above my kidneys. They release hormones to maintain blood pressure, and enable me to respond to stress.
The neuroblastoma occurs in my nerve tissue alongside my spinal cord in the neck, chest, abdomen or pelvis.
